MACOMB, IL – Late-inning magic was not enough for the Western Illinois baseball team on Friday nights. The Leathernecks stranded the bases load in the top of the ninth inning as they fell to the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 5-3. WIU moves to 13-36 on the year.
After only collecting three hits on Thursday, WIU spent no time finding the hit column on Friday. Adam Juran led off the game with a double down the left field line, giving the Leathernecks a runner in scoring position. Liam Bushey capitalized as he ground a ball through the right side for a one-out RBI single as WIU led 1-0 after the first inning.
Both teams stayed scoreless through the second inning before WIU doubled their lead in the top of the third. Kyree Alexander reached with two outs on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on a Chris Hege single that followed. Alexander used his speed to come around to score as Brock Lummus reached on an infield single. The ball squirted away from the first basemen. Alexander did not slow down as he rounded third and headed home. A head-first slide beat the throw as WIU doubled up their lead 2-0.
Southern Indiana got a run back in the bottom half of the third, but Tyler Kapraun kept the Leathernecks in the ball game. Back-to-back one, two, three innings by Kapraun kept WIU with a 2-1 lead as they headed into the sixth inning.
USI offense caught up to Kapraun and WIU as they struck for two runs in the sixth and two runs in the eighth, giving the Screaming Eagles a 5-2 lead and heading into the bottom of the ninth. Western Illinois did not go down without a fight in their final at-bats. Liam Bushey singled after the first two batters were retired, starting a two-out rally. He moved 90 feet after a pitch hit J.R. Heavilin. Alexander drove in the third Leatherneck run, going the opposite way for an RBI single. Hege followed with a single of his own as WIU moved the tying run to second base. However, a strikeout ended the rally as WIU fell 5-3.
