MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois baseball team's chances of post-season play dwindled as they fell 8-1 on the road to the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana. WIU moves to 13-35 on the season.
Hits and baserunners were hard to come by for the Leathernecks as they found themselves with only two runners on in the first four innings. Already trailing 6-0, WIU put together their best offensive inning in the fifth. Chris Hege worked a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a one-out single by Trevor Leon. After a fly out in foul territory, Adam Juran was hit by a pitch for the second time while loading the bases. WIU failed to convert any runs as a strikeout ended the threat.
USI added a pair of insurance runs in the 7th inning as they led 8-0. WIU did not let the Screaming Eagles complete the shutout as they tacked on their lone run in the top of the ninth. A pair of one-out walks by Kyree Alexander and Hege worked a runner in scoring position, and Brock Lummus delivered with an RBI single to left field.
Western Illinois collected three hits in the afternoon. The Leathernecks drew four walks as a team, and Adam Juran was hit twice by a pitch. Mason Telford pitched an inning out of relief, setting the new school program record in single-game appearances with 32.
Western Illinois and Southern Indiana continue their three-game series tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled at 6:00 p.m.
