Leathernecks Fall in Final Home Game

Western took a 17-8 loss to Southeast Missouri State on Sunday afternoon.

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois baseball wrapped up its final home game of the 2024 season at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium on Sunday, a rubber match with the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks. After splitting the series on Friday and Saturday, Western looked to clinch a series victory over the Redhawks, but SEMO had other ideas as they blasted eight home runs in a win over Western.

Southeast Missouri State started off with a one-run first inning, but Western starter Kyle Rosenfeld shut them down in the second. Western Illinois got its first two hits of the came in the second, thanks to Kyree Alexander and Chris Hege. Despite the two no-out singles, Western failed to even the score in the second frame.

SEMO hit their first home run in the third, taking a three-nothing lead over the Leathernecks. Western got on the board in the third as Alexander hit an RBI single to bring the Leathernecks within two.

Southeast Missouri State would get one back in the fourth, regaining their three-run advantage.

After loading the bases in the top of the fourth, Western pitcher Jackson Rodgers entered and struck out the final batter of the fifth to keep it a four-one ballgame.

Western broke even in the fifth, scoring three runs on three RBI singles from J.R. Heavilin, Chris Hege, and Brock Lummus.
The four-all score was the last tie of the game, as SEMO hit a two-run shot in the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, Adam Juran hit a solo shot to make it a one-run ballgame. Juran, who has had a spectacular Senior weekend, hit his third home run of the series and drove in his ninth run since Friday.

SEMO homered again in the seventh, bringing their lead back to three. A massive seven-run, three-homer eighth gave the Redhawks a 15-5 lead.

Western loaded the bases in the eighth, scoring three runners on RBI singles from Alexander and Hege. Alexander, Hege, and Heavilin all finished with three hits in the game.

A pair of solo home runs in the ninth gave the Redhawks a 17-8 lead, which would end up being the final.
