Leathernecks Record Ten Hits in Loss to Tennessee State

The Leatherneck offense recorded nine singles and a double in a six-run loss to the Tigers.

NASHVILLE, TN - Western Illinois started off on Sunday with a leadoff single from Malia Robertson, just their fourth hit of the weekend after getting no-hit in game one Sunday. Robertson's single was the first of ten Leatherneck hits on the day, as the offense looked to get back on track on Sunday.

Western would record three straight outs after Robertson's single in the first, bringing the game to the bottom half of the inning, where starting pitcher Emily Price has been excellent in the 2024 season. She also allowed a leadoff single but got the next three batters out to move the game to the second.

In the second, Sophia Sanchez singled for her first of three hits she would record in the game, but no one brought her home after a fielder's choice and flyout. The Tiger offense started to get going in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four runs on Price, who was pulled after the inning for Raven Morrison, who started the game at shortstop.

The four-run lead held until the fourth inning, when Bella Alvarez reached on an error to start the inning. Three straight singles from Kayden Porter, Sophia Sanchez, and Lillie Wools gave the Leathernecks their third run of the series and cut the lead to three. Morrison pitched a one-two-three fourth inning to move the game to the fifth.

Rylee Boone and Valerie Combs singled in the fifth, but the Leathernecks failed to make a dent in the Tiger lead as both runners were left on base. Tennessee State scored four more runs in the fifth, taking a seven-run lead as the Leathernecks were down to their final six outs.

Sanchez doubled to lead off the sixth, and Megan Leonard brought her home with a two-out single, making it an 8-2 ballgame. Combs singled in the seventh with two outs, but it was too late as the Leathernecks lost their eighth straight.

Next weekend, Western heads to Cape Girardeau to take on Southeast Missouri State from April 27-28.
