Leathernecks Drop Doubleheader at SEMO

| By:

Western lost the first two games of the series in a Friday doubleheader in Cape Girardeau

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - Western Illinois Softball looked to break its cold streak on Friday, but the Leathernecks dropped two in a Friday doubleheader against one of the top teams in the conference. Taking on Southeast Missouri State, who entered the day in second place in the conference, Western took a 6-0 loss in game one before losing 9-1 in game two.

Emily Price, who has had a great season inside the circle for the Leathernecks, got the start in game one. The senior from Charleston entered the day with a 2.58 ERA, one of the top marks in the conference. SEMO started hot on Price though, scoring three runs on two hits in the first, with all runs unearned due to fielding errors.

The Redhawks tacked on another run in the second before Megan Leonard gave the Leathernecks their first hit of the game. Leonard finished two-for-two on the day, her two hits being the only the Leathernecks had all game. Price allowed a single in the third but three flyouts kept the Redhawk lead at four. A two-RBI double in the fourth brought the SEMO lead to 6, and Price's day ended after the frame.

Kathryn McChristy came in for Price to start the fifth and threw a pair of shutout innings, allowing three hits on the day. The Leatherneck bats never heated up in game one though, ending the game in the seventh by a score of 6-0.

Game two saw the Leatherneck offense wake up immediately after a tough showing in game one, as freshman Malia Robertson hit a leadoff single. She immediately stole second to give the Leathernecks a runner in scoring position with no outs, and Rylee Boone singled and moved Robertson to third. Boone tried to steal second, but as the throw beat her to the base, Boone turned back towards first, which gave Robertson extra time to score from third on the play. Western entered the bottom of the first with a 1-0 lead.

Lillie Wools got the start in game two, and she allowed two runners on with one out but got out of the jam thanks to a nice play from shortstop Raven Morrison. The Redhawks would score four runs in the second, taking a 4-1 lead that the Leathernecks did not recover from.

Kayden Porter led off the third with a single, but that was the only baserunner of the inning. SEMO scored just one run in the third to make it a four-run game. Bella Alvarez hit a leadoff single to start the fourth, but Combs lined a ball to the second baseman that got out both Alvarez and Combs. Leonard then hit a two-out single, but a groundout to shortstop ended the inning.

SEMO scored three in the fourth, all earned runs off Raven Morrison, but Kathryn McChristy came in with no outs and the bases loaded and only gave up a sacrifice fly, as the Redhawks made it 8-1 entering the fifth.

Western got the bases loaded with just one out in the fifth, thanks to a pair of runners reaching on an error and a bunt single from Robertson, but a double play ended the inning. SEMO hit a solo walk-off homer to end the game in five innings, 9-1.

The series finale will be played in Cape Girardeau, on Saturday at noon.
