Western Gets Swept In Doubleheader at Tennessee State

| By:

The Leathernecks will look to win in game three on Sunday after dropping two to the Tigers.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, TN - Western Illinois softball was back in action on Saturday, playing the first two of a three-game conference series against the Tigers of Tennessee State. The Tigers swept the Leathernecks to clinch the series, as Western only scored two runs between the two games.

Western pitcher Emily Price got the start in game one, and the senior showed out with another big performance. A top ten pitcher in the conference by ERA, wins, and strikeouts, Price allowed a single in the first, but ended the inning without a score. The second inning was more of the same, as Price allowed another lead-off single but shut down the rest of the Tigers' bats to move to the third.

Price struck out two in a one-two-three inning in the third, but the score remained 0-0 as Western was unable to produce on offense. Despite allowing two runners on in the fourth, Price kept on cruising by ending the inning without allowing a score. She sat down the Tigers in order again in the fifth, striking out the final batter of the inning.

Another one-two-three in the sixth moved the game to the seventh, where the Western bats couldn't manage a baserunner. Tennessee State got a one-out single, and a steal moved the runner into scoring position. The Tigers walked it off on a passed ball, scoring the runner from second and ending the game 1-0. Western Illinois finished the game without a hit, and only one walk.

In game two, Lillie Wools started in the circle and started hot by putting down the Tiger bats in order. After walking the lead-off batter in inning two, the Tigers got on the board with a sacrifice fly, taking a 1-0 lead into the third.

After nine innings without a hit, Megan Leonard and Rylee Boone got on base via error to start the third. Western tied the game on Boone's reach on an error to the shortstop, then Bella Alvarez broke through with a double down the left-field line. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the third, scoring on an RBI double of their own.

Heading into the fourth tied at two, both teams went down in order. In the fifth, Malia Robertson doubled to left center, but she was not brought home. Valerie Combs threatened to take the lead in the sixth when she singled and stole second, but she was not brought home either. Tennessee State took advantage in the bottom of the sixth, as a two-run homer all but sealed the game, as Western went down in order in the seventh to end it.

Western will look to get one back against the Tigers, on Sunday at 1 PM.
