MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois women's basketball season did not have the fairy tale ending everyone hoped for as they fell 78-69 to Tennessee Tech in the first round of the Ohio Valley Tournament. The Leathernecks finished with 18 wins, the highest since 2017-18.

The inaugural run in the Ohio Valley tournament started with a bang as Anna Deets drilled a right-wing three-pointer, giving WIU an early 3-0 lead. Raegan McCowan started scoring as she drove right and got a layup to fall well, adding a foul. She would complete the three-point play as Western Illinois led 6-4 midway through the first quarter. Tennessee Tech would control the latter half of the quarter, but a three by Mallory McDermott and then another layup by McCowan kept WIU within one. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to seven, 18-11 before McDermott cut it back down to five at 18-13. Down 21-15, McCowan was fouled with 0.3 seconds in the first as she knocked down her free throws as WIU trailed 21-17 after one.

Both teams traded points throughout the first three and half minutes as the Leatherneck deficit bounced between six and four. WIU worked the deficit down to one possession as Addi Brownfield drove left and got her layup to fall.
