Western Illinois Falls on Thursday Night

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois baseball fell 6-3 in Cookeville, Tennessee, to the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. The Leathernecks fall to 6-16 overall and 2-2 in OVC play.

Western Illinois's offense started rolling early, as Maxton Polad drove a ball down the third base line for a one-out double. Liam Bushey singled to right field, moving Polad 90 feet, and Adam Juran brought him into score with a sacrifice fly, as WIU held a 1-0 lead. Tennessee Tech responded with a solo home run in the bottom half, and the first inning ended all squared at one.

WIU jumped back in front in the top of the second. Brock Lummus started the inning with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a groundout by J.R. Heavilin. Lummus moved to third on a Leatherneck groundout. With two outs, Max Slavens grounded the ball to the Golden Eagles shortstop, who committed an error, allowing Lummus to score, as Western Illinois retook the lead 2-1.

After Tennessee Tech struck for three runs in the bottom of the second, Jason Buhl started to dial in. The Leatherneck starter would go five more scoreless innings, holding the Golden Eagles offense in check. Western Illinois chipped away at the two-run deficit in the fourth inning. Kyree Alexander led off the inning with a single but was erased on the basepaths by a Lummus fielder's choice. Heavilin advanced Lummus to second base with a single, and Trevor Leon drove him in with an RBI single to center field.

Tennessee Tech put the game away with two runs in the eighth inning as they took game one 6-3.

WIU collected ten hits as a team, and four Leathernecks had multi-hit games. Maxton Polad and J.R. Heavilin had multiple hits, including an extra-base hit. Liam Bushey and Trevor Leon also had two hits. Chris Hege drew the lone walk for WIU.

WIU and Tennessee Tech resume their three-game series tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
