Western Illinois Falls to Tennessee Tech

MACOMB, IL – Five extra bases hits were not enough as Western Illinois baseball fell 12-2 against Tennessee Tech on Friday night. The Leathernecks drop to 6-17 on the season and fall to 2-3 in Ohio Valley play.

The Leatherneck bats woke up early as Liam Bushey drove a two-out pitch all the way to the center field fence for a two-out double. The Leathernecks could not produce an opening inning run as a flyout ended the threat. The Golden Eagles did not waste time scoring as the first six players to step to the plate came around to score as TTU had a 6-0 lead after one inning. Tennessee Tech added four more runs in the second as they jumped in front 10-0. Western Illinois defense settled down in the third inning, keeping TTU scoreless. The Golden Eagles added their 11th run in the fourth as they claimed an 11-0 lead.

Western Illinois got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Catcher Adam Juran fell behind 1-2 before he sent the ball over the left field fence for a solo home run as WIU trimmed the deficit back down to ten. Kyree Alexander kept the hot hitting going with his second double of the day as he sent it down the left-field line. Brock Lummus followed the double with one of his own as WIU put a crooked number on the scoreboard.

The Leathernecks stayed in the scoring threat mindset as Brock Lummus and J.R. Heavilin drew a pair of two-out walks. The Leathernecks threatened but could not push across their third run. TTU did push across their run as they scored in the bottom of the eighth inning, pushing their lead back up to ten. The Golden Eagles put the Leathernecks down quietly in the ninth as they held on to a 12-2 victory.

Kyree Alexander led the Leathernecks with two hits, and WIU totaled eight as a team. Brock Lummus and Adam Juran were the lone Leathernecks who drove in runs. Colton Kachinsky worked five full innings out of the Leatherneck bullpen, allowing just one run.

Western Illinois and Tennessee Tech finish their three-game series tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
