Tennessee Tech Defeats WIU on Senior Day

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University Women's Soccer took on Tennessee Tech on Sunday afternoon, their last home match of the season. The Golden Eagles bagged one goal in the first half and two in the second before Western got one back in the waning minutes as the Leathernecks were defeated 3-1 on Senior Day. 

Tech took control in the first half of the match, putting the pressure on Western early, getting six first-half corner kicks. It took until their sixth corner for the Golden Eagles to put one in, finally taking a one-nil lead in the 39th minute. TTU nearly put it in on their first try, but after bouncing off the woodwork, the ball was headed in by another Tech player. The 1-0 lead held until the halftime whistle. 

The WIU attack had better chances in the second half, getting a pair of corners in the 53rd and 57th minute, but did not get a shot off on the opportunities. 

Tennessee Tech scored off another corner in the 65th, their second of the match. They nearly had another goal 45 seconds later, but a save from Bernard denied the Golden Eagles of a third goal. 

A nice move and cut inside from a Tech midfielder led to their third goal of the game, making it three-nil. 

Western Illinois joined in on the set piece goals in the 86th, as Rachel Balinao tapped one in off of assists from Karaline Gray and Alanna Pennington. 

After the match, WIU seniors Rachel Balinao, Alexis Betker, Elise Bush, Karaline Gray, Isabel Navas Rodriguez, and Sydnee Sagal were honored. 

Western Illinois wraps up the season next Sunday, taking on Southern Indiana.
