Leathernecks Blanked in Season Finale

Southern Indiana defeated Western Illinois three-nil in the 2024 season’s final match.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Western Illinois University Women's Soccer kicked off the final day of the regular season with a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. Southern Indiana grabbed an early goal in the sixth minute and held on as they sent the Leathernecks home on the final day of the season.

Western Illinois, who entered Sunday needing a win as well as an SIUE loss and a UT Martin/Southeast Missouri draw to qualify for the OVC Tournament, had their hopes dashed early as they fell behind in the sixth minute. As the one-nil score held until halftime, SIUE's noon kick with Morehead State went final, resulting in a one-all draw and officially eliminating the Leathernecks.

In the second half, Southern Indiana scored twice more to secure their victory, as WIU failed to capitalize on a scoring chance in the match.

The Leathernecks lost the shot battle 21-9, as WIU only recorded one shot on goal, a free kick attempt from Alanna Pennington from about 40 yards out. Western lost the corner battle 8-7, and fouled more than the Screaming Eagles, fouling six times to USI's five.

Western Illinois fell to 1-14-1 on the season and 1-7-1 in conference play, finishing in tenth place in the OVC.
