Outings held in Springfield and Chicago for new coach

MACOMB -- It has been a whirlwind first month on the job for new Western Illinois University baseball coach Terry Davis, and the getting-to-know-you process continued this past week as the new coach met with baseball alumni for a pair of events organized by Leatherneck Baseball alumnus, Connie Kowal.

Davis, along with Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb, joined Western Illinois baseball alumni in Springfield last Tuesday for an event spearheaded by Leatherneck baseball alum Dave Martin and his wife, Bobbie.

"I appreciate all the work and effort put in by Connie Kowal to get the alumni together, and also the efforts from Dave Martin in Springfield," Bubb said. "Connie does a great job keeping the baseball alumni in touch with each other and this is just another example of how active alumni can assist Leatherneck Athletics.

Former WIU baseball players Stan Scott (1B/DH '86), Dave Martin (1B/DH '87), Larry Davsko (C '71), Connie Kowal (3B '74), Terry Whipple (2B '72), Randy Swanson (OF '73), George Rudis (P '73), Andy Griswold (P '96), Pat Hise (P '88), Steve Jeffers (2B '86) and Steve Schafer (OF '85) were on hand for the meet and greet with Davis and Bubb as the group discussed the past, present and future of Leatherneck baseball.

"It was great to get an opportunity to meet with a large group of our Baseball Alumni in Springfield," Western Illinois baseball coach Terry Davis said. "We want to take advantage of every opportunity that we have to get in front of people who have been here in the past and are passionate about our program. We discussed the current state of the program as well as the Vision for where we are going. We have a lot of work to do but its energizing to see so many people excited about the future of Leatherneck Baseball and their willingness to help."

The tour was not complete as Davis next headed to Chicago on Sunday to meet more baseball alums in the Windy City for an event at Slugger's before heading to Wrigley Field for the Chicago Cubs-Atlanta Braves game.

Baseball alums Gale Landers (OF, '75), Western Illinois Board of Trustees Chairperson Carin Stutz, Connie Kowal (3B, '74), Brent Turner (OF, '15), Jim Duszak (P, '74), Coach Davis, Peter Minella (P, '18), Brian Loconsole (P, '13) and Rich Hodyl (P, '86) met with Coach Davis to talk Western Illinois baseball.

"Chicago is going to be a huge part of our recruiting moving forward and it was great to connect with former Leathernecks in the area who are also connected to youth baseball in the city," Davis said. "It was also great to visit with WIU Board of Trustees Chairperson Carin Stutz and feel her passion for Western, the Athletic Department, and the city of Macomb. Again, lots to be done but we are surrounded by a lot of people who care about this place and it's our responsibility to them, to chip away at building a program the right way on a daily basis until we get to the level we need to be at in order to be successful.

"The last month has been great in terms of building a foundation of relationships with our Alumni and connecting with many others in the area. Our players will be here soon and we will get to work. Go Necks!"
