The Western Illinois track and field teams sent a small group to the Iowa State Alumni Meet on Saturday. Junior Logan Lommel stole the show, breaking the 1500 meter school record in 3:48.31. The previous record was set at 3:49.85 in 1992 by Jeff Reed. This tallies up Lommel's individual school records to four and total school records to six with relay records included.
"Logan had a fantastic race this weekend. His first ever mile race in college was 4:34 three years ago. Today's school record 1500 meter time equates to a 4:04 mile. His development is a testament of his tremendous work ethic, competitiveness, and ability to execute," coach Trey Brokaw said. "We needed this performance so that Logan could improve his conference ranking, which allows him to be seeded in the fast section at the conference championships next weekend."
On the women's side, Briza Dure had a personal best in the 100 meters and a near personal best in the 200 meters. Dure's showing this weekend moved her up on the conference performance list in both events. Paulina Wuestefeld won the women's 1500, narrowly missing her personal best.
The Leathernecks will head to the Summit League Conference Championships on May 11 -13, 2023 in Fargo, ND.
