Leathernecks Lose Heartbreaker 11-8

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell late to the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday (May 6) night. WIU held an 8-5 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th inning before falling 11-8.

Omaha would score two early runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. After that, it was the Tyler Kapraun show. The Leathernecks pitcher would go six strong innings striking out four and allowing just two runs. 

Omaha's 2-0 lead would stay that way until the top of the 7th inning. Chase VanDerGinst would double down the left field line with two outs to give WIU a runner-in-scoring position. VanDerGinst would move up 90 feet on a wild pitch before Jack Sievers would drive him in with an RBI double, cutting the deficit to one.

UNO would add three runs in their half of the 7th inning, extending their lead to 5-1. Western Illinois would respond with a seven-run 8th inning. Nick Mitchell led off the 8th with a walk extending his on-base streak to 23 games. Brian Erbe would move Mitchell to third base with a single to right field. Derek Botaletto would keep his hot hitting going with a ground-rule double bringing in Mitchell. With Erbe and Botaletto in scoring position, Jake Allgeyer would like a ball off the left field fence bringing in both runners. Max Slavens would reach via an error, and Adam Juran would walk to load the bases for VanDerGinst. VanDerGinst would line a ball back up the middle, scoring both Allgeyer and Slavens, giving WIU their first lead of 6-5. WIU would extend their lead as Chase VanDerGinst would steal second base forcing a throw that would end up in center field and plating Juran. VanDerGinst would end up on third base after interference. J.R. Heavilin would add the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, bringing home VanDerGinst.

Omaha responded with six runs in the bottom half of the 8th inning, putting them back in front 11-8. WIU could not plate any runs in the top of the 9th inning, falling 11-8.

Chase VanDerGinst led the Leatherneck hits with three hits in his five at-bats. Adam Juran and Jake Allgeyer were right behind VanDerGinst with two hits each. The Leathernecks would total 11 hits, with four being extra-base hits. WIU would draw six walks as a team on the night.

The Leathernecks and Mavericks square up in a rubber match on Sunday (May 7) at 1:00 p.m.
