Leathernecks Fall in Series Finale

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball fell 3-2 in the series finale to the Omaha Mavericks on Sunday (May 7) afternoon.

After combing for 19 runs in game two of the series, the Leathernecks and Mavericks were locked into a low-scoring affair. WIU would threaten in the 1st inning as Nick Mitchell extended his on-base streak to 24 games with a leadoff double. Mitchell would be called out at second base on the next batter as Ricky Pospisil's single would hit Mitchell as he was trying to advance to third base. WIU would strand a runner on first base.

Omaha would strike for a run in the bottom of the 1st inning as a solo home run started the scoring. WIU would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the 2nd inning. Adam Juran would start the comeback as he would single with one out in the inning. Steven Walsh would follow with one of his own, moving Juran into scoring position. Jack Sievers would have the third single in a row for WIU, bringing in Juran to tie the game at one.

Omaha would score a run in the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd pushing their lead out to two. WIU responded in the top of the 5th inning, cutting the deficit in half. Brian Erbe lined the ball through the right side of the infield for a leadoff single. Mitchell would walk, moving Erbe to second base. Ricky Pospisil would lay down a sacrifice bunt advancing Erbe and Mitchell 90 feet. With one out, Derek Botaletto would deliver an RBI ground out to cut Omaha's lead in half 3-2.

WIU would threaten to tie the game in the 9th inning. Chase VanDerGinst would fight off a pitch on the hands, shooting it to left field for a leadoff single. Juran would bunt him to second base giving WIU a runner-in-scoring position with one out. Walsh would follow Juran lining a ball off the third basemen's glove. VanDerGinst would break for third, beating the throw. However, he would slide off the bag, getting tagged for the second out. 

Western Illinois would outhit the Mavericks 8-7. Eight of the nine Leathernecks in the starting lineup would tally a hit on the day. Nick Mitchell would have the lone extra-base hit in his double.

Caden Kratz pitched 6.0 solid inning for WIU. The senior from Mason City allowed only three runs well, striking out three.

The Leathernecks stay in conference play all next week as they take on the Tommies of St. Thomas in a six-game set. The first two games will be played at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium on Tuesday (May 9), with the final four being played in St. Paul over the weekend.
