WIU Falls Late at St. Louis

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball fell late to St. Louis University on Tuesday (Apr. 25) night at the Billiken Sports Center. The Leathernecks got an early 5-0 lead before St. Louis returned with eight unanswered runs to take the mid-week matchup 8-5.

The Leathernecks would immediately put pressure on the Billikens on Tuesday night. With two out in the first inning, Nick Mitchell would single up the middle increasing his on-base streak to 17 games. Jack Sievers followed Mitchell with another single up the middle giving WIU a scoring threat in the top of the first. WIU would be unable to plate a run as a ground ball would end the frame.

Western Illinois would plate a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd inning. J.R. Heavilin would draw a one-out walk to start the Leatherneck's offense. He would then steal second base, putting himself in a scoring position. Steven Walsh followed with a walk of his own. Both baserunners would advance 90 feet after a passed ball. With one out and runners on second and third, Brian Erbe would send a single down the right field line bringing in the Leatherneck's first two runs of the ball game.

WIU used two-out magic in the third inning to extend their 2-0 lead. Aron Harrington would come into pinch hit for Sievers and send a ball right back up the middle for a two-out single. Ricky Pospisil would wear a pitch putting a Leatherneck in scoring position for the third straight inning. Jake Allgeyer would take advantage as he blasted a three-run homerun over the right field fence, giving WIU their largest lead, 5-0. The three-run home run was Allgeyer's fourth of the season and first since March 31st.

The Leathernecks would put a runner in scoring position in the 4th and 7th inning but could not bring them around to score.

Nick Mitchell led the team in hits going 2-4 on the night. Jake Allgeyer and Brian Erbe had the RBI's. Allgeyer was the only Leatherneck with an extra-base hit with his home run. WIU, as a team, collected seven hits to score their five runs. The Leathernecks drew four walks as a team and stole one base.

Western Illinois will continue their road trip this weekend with a three-game series against North Dakota State.
