Leathernecks Drop Opening Game

Leathernecks fall 10-0

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois fell in the opening game of a three-game set to North Dakota State in Fargo, ND. The Leathernecks were shutout as they were defeated 10-0 at Newman Outdoor Field.

WIU would have their first scoring chance in the top of the 2nd inning. After a strikeout to start the inning, Adam Juran would single to left field. Arron Harrington would Juran single with a single of his own. He would send a pitch right back where it came from with a single up the middle putting runners on first and second. Ricky Pospisil would load the bases drawing a walk with one out. WIU would strand the bases loaded, keeping the game scoreless.

NDSU would start the scoring in the bottom of the third, adding five runs to give themselves a 5-0 lead. WIU would have their next scoring threat in the eighth inning. Derek Botaletto would go the other way with one out for a single. After a strikeout to giving WIU two outs, Nick Mitchell would jump on the first pitch sending it up the middle for a single. Mitchell's single would keep his on-base streak alive, hitting 18 straight games.

WIU would tally five hits as a team. Derek Botaletto led the team with two hits. Mitchell, Juran, and Harrington would have the other three hits. Ricky Pospisil drew the lone walk for WIU.

The Leathernecks and Bison continue their three-game series tomorrow at 2:00.
