Leathernecks Fall to Bison

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball fell to the North Dakota State Bison 13-3 on Saturday (Apr. 29) afternoon.

Western Illinois offense got things rolling in the top of the 5th inning. Down 13-0, Kyree Alexander would have a two-out single to left field. Brian Erbe would advance Alexander 90 feet by drawing a walk putting runners on first and second base. Erbe and Alexander would move up to second and third base on a wild pitch. Nick Mitchell would extend his on-base streak with an RBI infield single. Mitchell would ground a ball to NDSU's second basemen and use his speed to beat out the throw cutting the NDSU lead 13-1. Mitchell's on-base streak moves to 19 games with his single.

Down 13-1 in the top of the 7th inning, WIU would need three runs to extend the game. Alexander would start the rally by getting hit by a pitch. Erbe and Mitchell would load the bases with walks of their own. Jake Allgeyer would drive in two runs as he single-threw the right side of the infield, bringing the WIU deficit down to ten. WIU would not score another run causing the ten-run rule to come into effect.

Jake Allgeyer and Chase VanDerGinst both had two hits to lead WIU today. Nick Mitchell and Kyree Alexander both had one impact. WIU, as a team, had five walks. Brian Erbe led the team with two walks.

WIU and NDSU will complete their three-game series tomorrow at Newman Outdoor Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
