Western Illinois Softball Splits With KC

Series finale slated for 12 p.m. on Sunday (April 23).

MACOMB, Ill. – Leatherneck softball was in action Saturday afternoon (April 22), splitting a doubleheader against the Kansas City Roos at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. Both teams will battle for the series with a single game on Sunday, scheduled for 12 p.m., following a pregame ceremony to recognize WIU's outgoing seniors.

Game 1: Kansas City 9, Western Illinois 7
Kansas City's bats got hot early in game one, scoring three runs in the top of the first and adding another three in the fourth before Western was able to respond. The Leathernecks came up with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the KC lead to four, but the Roos built the lead out to seven with a strong sixth inning.

With game one nearing conclusion, Western's bats got hot and built momentum with a strong seventh inning. After Malorie Gill and Riley Eagan led the inning off with base hits, Balla Alvarez and Cynthia Hull hit back-to-back doubles that scored three runs before recording the first out. Alivia Beard and Piper Foote added RBI singles later in the inning as WIU scored five runs in the seventh but was unable to close the gap, going final at 9-7 in favor of the visitors.

Beard finished a perfect 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored as Foote (2-4, two RBI), Bella Alvarez (2-4, one RBI) and Megan Leonard (2-4) all recorded multi-hit performances. Hull and Riley Eagan both finished 1-1 as pinch hitters while Savannah Rodriguez and Malorie Gill also had hits in a game where WIU out-hit Kansas City, 13-12.

Savannah Rodriguez started in the circle and struck out five batters while allowing seven hits and five earned runs, with Sophia Honse coming on in relief and finishing with a line of three innings pitched, five hits, three runs (all earned) and two strikeouts.

Game 2: Western Illinois 9, Kansas City 1 (F/6)
The momentum at the plate that was started in the seventh inning of game one continued into the bottom of game two's first inning, as Rodriguez hit a three-run blast to right field to score Alvarez and Gabriela Drager and build a 3-0 lead just four batters into the game. The home run was Rodriguez's team-leading sixth of the season and puts her in a tie with Jamie Goss (2009-12) for third-most home runs in a career with 20, with Ashley Cambell (2009-12) sitting in sole possession of second place with 21 career homers.

KC got on the board with an RBI triple during the third inning but WIU quickly responded. After Drager singled to right and later advanced to third on an error, Riley Eagan hit into a fielder's choice that would score Drager to rebuild a three-run lead and set the stage for a big fourth inning.

Western Illinois scored four more runs in the fourth, starting with a Drager RBI single to score Alivia Beard that was followed by a Savannah Rodriguez ground out to score Bella Alvarez from third. In the next at bat, Eagan stepped up to the plate and once again drove in a run, this time with her first home run as a Leatherneck thanks to a hard-hit ball over the fence in left-center field. After four innings, WIU led 8-1.

The bats cooled off a bit for both teams as neither would score until the sixth inning, when Eagan hit a grounder to second that was misplayed by the Kansas City defender as Rylee Boone came across to score, ending the game at 9-1 after six innings.

Drager finished a perfect 3-3 with one RBI and three runs scored while Bella Alvarez went 2-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Alivia Beard was 1-4 while Rodriguez finished 1-4 with four RBI and one run scored, and Eagan finished the day 1-3 with three RBI, one walk, and one run scored.

Emily Price started in the circle and put in a quality performance that lowered her team-best ERA to 2.87, going the distance while allowing just one hit and one unearned run; Price struck out four Roo hitters and is now up to seven complete games this season.

Western Illinois is back in action tomorrow, playing the series finale at 12 p.m. A ceremony to recognize the team's two graduating seniors, Savannah Rodriguez and Piper Foote, is set to begin at approximately 11:40 a.m.
