Leathernecks Fall on Senior Day

WIU bats put four runs on the board in the first, Western hits the road to face Omaha next weekend.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois softball played Sunday afternoon (April 23), falling 10-4 to the Kansas City Roos at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. The Leathernecks have six games remaining in the 2023 regular season, all set to be played on the road, beginning next weekend at Omaha.

After recognizing Savannah Rodriguez and Piper Foote prior to first pitch, both seniors contributed to a huge first inning. Riley Eagan and Bella Alvarez led the inning off with back-to-back singles before Gabriela Drager doubled to right center to score one run. Rodriguez then came to the plate and grounded out to second but was able to score a run, and Drager scored on the next at bat after another ground out to second. After Georgia Rea tripled in the next at bat, Foote singled up the middle to build a 4-0 WIU lead.

Kansas City cut into the Leatherneck lead with an RBI single in the second and then two RBI singles in the third would bring the deficit to within one run; the Roos regained the lead in the fourth inning before adding three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Western did load the bases in the fifth thanks to two walks and a Maria Luna single but was unable to convert as the game went final in favor of the visitors.

In the circle, Rodriguez would allow eight hits and three runs while striking out three in three innings of work before being replaced by Emily Price, who gave up five hits and five runs (three earned) across two innings pitched; Price struck out two Roo batters. Kathryn McChristy pitched the final two innings and finished with a line of four hits, two runs (both earned) and one strikeout.

Bella Alvarez led the team with three hits, finishing 3-4 with a run scored, while Rea finished 2-4 with that first inning triple and run scored. The Leathernecks finished with 10 hits as Savannah Rodriguez (1-3, RBI, BB) and Piper Foote (1-2, RBI, two walks) both recorded a hit and RBI in their final appearances at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.

Western Illinois is back in action next Saturday (April 29), opening a weekend series against Omaha at 1 p.m. The team heads north the following weekend for a three-game series against North Dakota to conclude the 2023 regular season.
