Western Illinois Softball Drops Two at Omaha

The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 30).

OMAHA, Neb. – Leatherneck softball played a doubleheader against the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday (April 29), falling 9-1 and 5-2 in two games played at Connie Claussen Field. The series finale is set to begin play Sunday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
Game 1: Mavericks 9, Leathernecks 1 (F/6)
Emily Price started in the circle in game one and got off to a quick start, striking out two of the Mavs' first three batters, though Omaha was able to push two runs across during the opening frame. Price would pitch one more inning to finish with two hits allowed, two runs (both unearned) and two strikeouts across two innings of work, before being replaced in the third by Kathryn McChristy. McChristy finished the game and allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out three.
 
Maria Luna led the team with two hits, finishing 2-3 with one RBI thanks to a sixth-inning single to left that scored Bella Alvarez. Alvarez, along with Gabriela Drager, also recorded hits while Georgia Rea and Riley Eagan found their way on base with walks.
 
Game 2: Mavericks 5, Leathernecks 2
Western Illinois' bats came out on a roll early in game two as the Leathernecks put two on the board with two hits. After Georgia Rea was hit by a pitch and stole second, Gabriela Drager walked to set the stage for Maria Luna, who doubled down the left field line to score Rea. Savannah Rodriguez hit a single to center in the next at bat to score Drager from third before recording a strikeout in the bottom half of the inning as the team's staritng pitcher. After one, WIU led, 2-0. 
 
Omaha would put three runs on the board in the second before adding two more in the third to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 advantage. Though Western put runners in scoring position in the fifth and seventh innings, no runners scored and the game finished in favor of Omaha.
 
Luna (1-3, RBI) and Rodriguez (1-3, RBI) combined Bella Alvarez (1-3, double), Malorie Gill (1-1) and Cynthia Hull (1-1, double) for five total hits while the defense finished with a perfect fielding percentage. In the circle, Rodriguez started and threw her team-leading eighth complete game of the season, finishing with 10 hits and five runs allowed while striking out two across all six innings of work.
 
The Leathernecks and Mavericks will play the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 30).
