Leathernecks Fall in Series Finale at Omaha

Western Illinois heads to Grand Forks, N.D., next weekend to wrap up the regular season.

OMAHA, Neb. – Western Illinois softball played Sunday afternoon (April 30), falling 7-0 to the Omaha Mavericks at Connie Claussen Field. The Leathernecks have just one series remaining in the 2023 regular season, as the team will face North Dakota on the road next weekend.

Emily Price got the start in the circle and came out on a roll early, striking out two of the first three batters she saw. Although Price had early momentum, Omaha opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning before adding four in the third. Price, who was replaced by Sophia Honse to start the fifth inning, finished with four strikeouts while allowing five runs and seven hits across four innings of work. Honse finished the game while allowing three hits and two earned runs in two innings.

The WIU bats were quiet in this one, as a walk by Maria Luna in the fifth and sixth inning Georgia Rea double accounted for the team's only baserunners of the game.

Western Illinois will head north for the final regular season series next weekend, taking on the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in Grand Forks, N.D. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday (May 5) with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m., before starting the series finale at 1 p.m. on Saturday (May 6).
