Leathernecks Take Game Two against UNC, 5-4

WIU snaps seven game losing streak against Northern Colorado

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball took game two of a three game series with the Northern Colorado Bears on Saturday (Apr. 22). The Leathernecks battled from behind to take a 5-4 victory at Alfred D. Boyer stadium.

After Northern Colorado took the lead in the top of the first inning WIU would respond in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs Nick Mitchell would line a ball down the right field line all the way to the fence. Mitchell would not slow down well rounding second base as he would slide into third base with a two out triple. Jake Allgeyer would draw a walk to set up a first and third situation. With Adam Juran at the plate Allgeyer would take off for second base stopping three quarters of the way there. Northern Colorado would throw down to second base allowing Nick Mitchell to start heading home. UNC would throw back home trying to get Mitchell, but his speed would beat the throw tying the game at 1-1. Allgeyer would take second base on the throw home.

"We had some timely hitting today." Said Interim Head Coach Tayler Sheriff. "Two out RBIs were the difference."

Two out hitting would come into play once again. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th inning Brian Erbe would single up the middle putting Jack Sievers in motion. Northern Colorado's center fielder would miss play the ball letting it roll under his glove. Sievers who was in motion on contact would not slow down as he would end up all the way at home after the error by UNC. Erbe also kept the feet moving as he would slide all the way into third base safely helping WIU tie the game at 2. Derek Botaletto would keep the two out hitting approach with a single to right center field giving WIU the 3-2 lead as Erbe would score.

Heading into the bottom of the 6th inning Western Illinois would see themselves down once again. Down 4-3 the Chase VanDerGinst would start the inning with a opposite field single. Ricky Pospisil would lay down a sacrifice bunt advancing VanDerGinst 90 feet. After a fly out and a walk. J.R. Heavilin would blop a ball into shallow right center field bringing around VanDerGinst tying the game at 4-4. The Leathernecks would keep to threaten in the 6th inning as they would load the bases before UNC would work out of the jam limiting the damage to just one run.

WIU would be back on the attack in the bottom of the 7th inning. Jack Sievers would have a one out double to get the offense rolling. After a fly out Ricky Pospisil would have a clutch two out RBI double down the left field line scoring Sievers. The double in the 7th would put WIU up 5-4 and the bullpen would do the rest.

After six solid innings from Tyler Kapraun Cade Herrmann and Jack Bell would be lights out. Herrmann would take over in the 7th inning sitting down the Bears in order. Herrman would retire the first four batters he faced after getting the first out in the 8th. After a WIU error and a walk coach Sheriff would head back to the bullpen to bring in Jack Bell. Bell would come in and get back-to-back strikeout to end the 8th. Bell would do the rest in the 9th inning going one, two, three to pick up the save.

"Cade did a nice job for his part of the game," Sheriff said. "He bridged it well to Jack and Jack is a guy we feel confident in late in games."
