WIU Falls in Series Finale

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell to Northern Colorado 8-4 in the series finale at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium on Sunday (Apr. 23) afternoon. WIU got on the board first with a run in the 1st inning, but Northern Colorado would use three runs in the 4th and three more in the 8th to help them win the series.

Western Illinois bats picked up right where they left off in game two. The Leathernecks started the bottom of the first inning with Derek Botaletto and J.R. Heavilin singling up the middle. With runners on first and second, Nick Mitchell would single through the right side loading the bases. After UNC retired the next two Leatherneck hitters, Ricky Pospisil would reach first base on a catcher interference call, advancing all runners 90 feet and bringing Botaletto around to score.

WIU would extend their early 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Mitchell would reach base for the second time of the day as he drew a leadoff walk. Adam Juran would follow the leadoff walk with a single into the left-center giving WIU baserunners zero outs. Jack Sievers would lay a bunt down the third base line attempting to advance the runners, would beat out the throw to the first base giving himself an infield single. On the play, the ball would get away from the first basemen allowing Mitchell to score and Juran to move to third. With one out and Juran on third, Jake Allgyer would send a ball deep enough into left field that Juran would tag up from third and come home, increasing WIUs lead to 3-0.

The Bears would keep WIU off the scoreboard till the bottom of the 9th inning. Down 8-3 by that point, Mitchell would start a two-out rally with a single to center. Juran would ground a ball to the shortstop and airmail the first basemen. Mitchell would move up to third base on the throwing error. Juran would be in motion on the next batter, swiping second base without a throw. Mitchell and Juran would move 90 feet closer as UNC would be called for a balk bringing in WIU's fourth run.

Western Illinois would again have double-digit hits on the afternoon with ten. Sievers would be the only WIU batter to have an extra-base impact. Nick Mitchell, Brian Erbe, and Sievers would all have two hits. Mitchell extends his on-base streak to 15 games in a row, getting on base in three of his five at-bats today.

WIU will return to non-conference play on Tuesday (Apr. 25), taking on St. Louis University on the road. The road trip will continue through the weekend as WIU will head to Fargo, N.D., to take on North Dakota State in a three-game series.
