WIU Bested by SIUE, 11-1

WIU Falls in opening game of homestand

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team lost a mid-week matchup with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Tuesday (Apr. 18) afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer. The Leathernecks would score their lone run in the 3rd inning as SIUE would win 11-1.

The Cougars jumped on the Leathernecks fast in the Tuesday matinee. SIUE would see nine runs cross the plate in the first three innings, giving themselves a 9-0 lead. Western Illinois would get on the board in the third inning, cutting into the deficit.

Jack Sievers started the inning with a single threw the right side of the infield, giving WIU their second baserunner on the day. After a flyout for the first out, Nick Mitchell would keep his on-base streak alive with a walk advancing Sievers to second base. Batting in the three-hole today, Derek Botalletto would wear a pitch earning the free pass to first base and loading the bases for Jake Allgeyer. Allgeyer would stay patient at the plate as he would work a walk, bringing in Sievers to give WIU their first run of the day.

After scoring nine runs in the first three innings, WIU's defense locked in. In the top of the 4th inning, Max Slavens made a diving catch in foul territory to start the inning. In the 5th inning, SIUE would put runners on first and second base, but Eric Cunning would connect with Botaletto to pick off a runner at second base. Ricky Pospisil would have the defensive gem in the 6th inning, throwing out a Cougar runner at third base from right field. Slavens would be back in action in the top of the 8th inning as he would throw out a Cougar runner at 2nd base getting the force out from the shallow right field.

Adam Juran, Derek Botaletto, and Jack Sievers would contribute all the hits for WIU. Juran would have the only extra-base hit as he lined a double down the left-field line in the bottom of the 6th inning. Jake Allgeyer would lead the Leathernecks in walks as he would have two of the four free passes.

Western Illinois will continue its homestand against Northern Colorado this weekend (Apr. 21-23). This weekend WIU Baseball recognizes their baseball alum. 22 Leathernecks from six decades of WIU Baseball will be back at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
