WIU Baseball Drops Game One Against Northern Colorado

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois baseball fell in game one of a three-game set to Northern Colorado Bears on Friday (Apr. 21) afternoon. The Leathernecks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Northern Colorado scored four unanswered runs en route to a 4-2 victory.

Northern Colorado tried to push across runs in the first and second inning, but WIU's defense kept it scoreless. The Bears would threaten in the 1st in the 2nd inning putting runners in scoring position. In the first inning, UNC would have runners on first and second base before Jake Armstrong would get a fly ball and a ground out to keep the Bears at zero. UNC would threaten again in the top of the 2nd inning, loading the bases with two out before Armstrong would get a fly ball to center field to work out of the jam.

WIU's offense would pick up their defense in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Adam Juran led off the inning with a line drive right back up the middle into center field to give WIU a leadoff baserunner. J.R. Heavilin would follow Juran with a single of his own, lining the ball into left field and advancing Juran to second base. Jack Sievers squared around to lay down a sacrifice bunt and put it perfectly down the third base line as his sacrifice attempt would turn into an infield single loading the bases. Aron Harrington would have Western Illinois' fourth hit of the inning as he sent the ball into the left-center gap driving in a pair. Harrington would double his RBI total on the year on the double to give WIU the early 2-0 lead.

The Leatherneck's offense would go quiet over the next four innings as Northern Colorado would strike for four runs in that time to give them a 4-2 lead. WIU's offense would pick it back up in the 7th inning. Heavilin would single right back up the middle giving him another multi-hit game on the season. Heavilin would get put in motion as he would swipe second base with one out. Harrington would walk, giving WIU two runners on, but they would need help to bring around anyone to score.

The bottom of the 8th inning would start with a bang as Ricky Pospisil would find the right field line legging out a leadoff double. Nick Mitchell would follow with his second walk of the afternoon. Derek Botaletto would bunt both runners 90 feet putting the tying run at second base. However, WIU could not advance them further, stranding them on the base paths.

WIU used only two pitchers in game one of the three-game series. Jake Armstrong went five full innings allowing just one earned run on seven hits. Jack Bell came in relief and was lights out. After a leadoff single, Bell retired the next seven Bear hitters he saw. Bell would end up going four innings striking out three and allowing just one hit.

Western Illinois bats tallied eight hits as a team. Jack Sievers and J.R. Heavilin both combined for four of the eight hits. Ricky Pospisil, Derek Botaletto, and Aron Harrington all had an extra-base hit. The Leathernecks worked just three walks, including two by Nick Mitchell, who extends his on-base streak to 14 games.

Western Illinois continues the three-game series on Saturday (Apr. 22), with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. WIU Baseball will recognize six decades of WIU Baseball alumni as 22 former Leathernecks will return to Alfred D. Boyer. Pregame festivities begin at approximately 12:40 p.m.
