WIU Falls in Final Two Games Against Michigan State

WIU returns home next weekend

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois dropped the final two games of their three-game series against Michigan State on Saturday (Apr. 14). The Spartans defeated WIU 12-2 in seven innings in game one of the doubleheaders in East Lansing and defeated WIU 10-1 in game 2.

Runs were hard to come by in game one of the doubleheader at Michigan State. Both teams would stay scoreless for the first two and a half innings before MSU would score eight runs between the third and fifth inning to take an 8-0 lead.

WIU would get on the board in the 6th inning. Derek Botaletto would get a one-out single to start the Leatherneck's scoring rally. Botaletto would advance to second on a wild pitch to put himself in scoring position. Jake Allgeyer would move Botaletto 90 feet further with a single through the left side of the infield. J.R. Heavilin would drive in Botaletto with a sac fly to cut the deficit to seven.

WIU would add another run in the seventh. Chase VanDerGinst would lead off the inning with a single to center field. Adam Juran would replace spots with him at first base, grounding into the fielder's choice. Jack Sievers would walk, advancing Juran to second. After another fielder's choice, Nick Mitchell would walk to load the bases. Botaletto would do the rest with a five-pitch walk to bring WIU's second run across the plate. WIU would not get any closer as Michigan State would score four runs in the bottom of the 7th to put the 10-run rule effect.

Western Illinois would tally six hits in the first game of the doubleheader. Derek Botaletto and Jake Allgeyer led WIU with two hits each. Botaletto and Heavilin would have RBIs in the first game. Nick Mitchell would keep his on-base streak as he would draw a walk in the shortened seven-inning game.

Western Illinois got on the board in the first in-game two of the doubleheader. After back-to-back ground outs by the Leathernecks, Adam Juran would send a double through the left side getting WIU their first runner in scoring position. Ricky Pospisil would follow Juran's double with a double of his scoring Juran. The Leathernecks would be unable to score any more runs stranding a runner at second base.

Michigan State would respond to the 1-0 deficit with ten runs over the next five innings, giving themselves a 10-1 inning. With two outs in the top of the 8th inning, the rain would start to come down in East Lansing, forcing a one-hour and four-minute delay. After the rain delay, Nick Mitchell would continue his on-base streak as he would single to right field. The Spartans would finish the game with a run in the bottom of the 8th inning to put the 10-run rule in effect.

The Leathernecks had four hits as a team, with half of their hits going for extra bases in game two. Western Illinois drew two walks in the second game as a team. Nick Mitchell kept his on-base streak going with a single to right field.

The Leathernecks are back in action next week with a four-game homestand. They will stay in non-conference play on Tuesday (Apr. 18), hosting Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. They return to conference play next weekend at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium, hosting Northern Colorado in a three-game series.
