Leathernecks Drop Mid-Week Clash

WIU falls to EIU in Charleston

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell on the road to Eastern Illinois on Wednesday (Apr. 12). The Panthers used an eight-run 7th inning to pull out in front and defeat WIU 14-0.

Western Illinois offense would be held in check in Charleston as the Leatherneck could only tally four hits on the afternoon. Jake Allgeyer got one of those hits in the first inning as he drove the ball through the left side of the infield for a two-out single. WIU bats would go quiet as the next nine Leathernecks would be retired in order.

WIU would have their next base runner in the top of the 4th inning when J.R. Heavilin drove the ball right back up the middle giving WIU a two-out base runner. The Leathernecks would be unable to move him further as EIU would get a fly ball to end the inning.

Still down 2-0 in the 5th inning, Aron Harrington would draw a leadoff walk giving WIU their first base runner with less than two outs all game. The Leathernecks would not advance him as a fly ball, and then a double play ended the 5th inning.

Nick Mitchell would single in the 6th inning with one out to give the Leathernecks a base runner. Mitchell's single would increase his streak of reaching base safely to nine games in a row. Mitchell has reached base safely in 25 of the 27 games the Leathernecks have played this season.

Eastern Illinois would break open the 3-0 ball game in the bottom of the 7th inning as they would plate eight runs to increase their lead to 11-0. They would keep their feet on the gas pedal as they tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the 8th inning.

WIU would get their first base runner in scoring position in the 9th inning. Brian Erbe would come into pinch hit for Derek Botaletto. Erbe would ground a ball to third with one out, beating out the throw for an infield single. Erbe would advance to second base on the next batter as Allgeyer ground out advancing Erbe. WIU could not bring around Erbe, as a strikeout would end the game.

WIU would total four hits in the afternoon. All four hits would come from the first four spots in the lineup. As a team, WIU walked twice and only struck out three times.

Caden Kratz got the start on the mound this afternoon. The senior went five innings allowing just two runs on six hits. Kratz would not walk a single Panther in his five innings of work well, also striking out three.

WIU will stay on the road this weekend. The Leathernecks will travel to East Lansing, Michigan, to battle Michigan State in a three-game set. The first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. on Friday.
