WIU Falls Late at Michigan State

Leathernecks tally 11 hits in loss

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell at Michigan State on Friday evening. The Leathernecks outhit the Spartans 11-10, but MSU would use four home runs to take the opening game 10-9.

Western Illinois jumped out in front early. Nick Mitchell would lead off the game with a single, advancing to third on an error by the left fielder. Derek Botaletto would bring Mitchell in immediately as he would single to the shortstop, giving WIU a 1-0 lead. After a fielder's choice would have Jake Allgeyer switch spots with Botaletto, J.R. Heavilin would double WIU's lead with a double to left center, scoring Allgeyer from first base.

WIU would extend their lead in the top of the second inning. Once again, it would be Botaletto. Botaletton would have a two-out double to left center, bringing Mitchell around from first base to extend Western Illinois' lead to three.

Michigan State would get two runs back in the 4th inning, cutting the deficit to one before WIU would strike again. The Leathernecks would load the bases in the top of the 5th inning off of two walks and a fielder's choice. Jack Sievers would keep his hot hitting going with a double down the right-field line. The double would bring in both Heavilin and Ricky Pospisil giving WIU a 5-2 lead.

MSU would bring themselves within two runs after a run in the bottom half of the 5th, but WIU would respond in the 6th inning. Nick Mitchell would walk, reaching base for his third time. Michigan State would throw the ball away on a failed pick-off attempt letting Mitchell move up 90 feet. Mitchell would move up another 90 feet as Botaletto would lay down a sac bunt, moving him up. Botaletto would safely reach first base on an error by MSU third basemen. Allgeyer would take advantage of the two errors with an RBI single to center field, scoring Mitchell. Heavilin would keep the train moving as he laid down a bunt for a base hit. Michigan State would have their third-inning error as the throw trying to get Heavilin would go down the right field line scoring Botaletto. WIU would tack on their third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Adam Juran to give WIU an 8-3 lead.

Michigan State would score seven unanswered runs over the 6th and 7th inning to pull out in front 10-8. WIU would have one last chance in the 9th inning. Adam Juran would bring WIU within one run as he would send his first home run of the season over the left-field fence.

Western Illinois would outhit the Spartans tallying 11 hits on the evening. Out of the 11 hits, five of them would go for extra bases. Derek Botaletto would lead the Leathernecks going 3-4 from the plate with an RBI. Allgeyer and Heavilin would both have two hits. WIU would draw three walks to help the Leathernecks have eight of their nine hitters reach base safely today.

Western Illinois and Michigan State will wrap up their series tomorrow as they will play a doubleheader with game one starting at 10:35 a.m. (CT) and game two at approximately 2:35 p.m. (CT).
