Last Time Out
Western Illinois last took the field on Tuesday night against the University of Illinois-Chicago. The Leathernecks fell behind early after a four-run first inning by the Flames. Derek Botaletto brought WIU back within one run after his base-clearing double in the third. UIC would extend their lead to 10-3 before a three-run eighth inning by WIU cut the deficit to four. The Leathernecks could not get any closer as they dropped the midweek game 10-6.

Road Warriors
Due to cancellations and postponements, Western Illinois will open its 2023 season on a 23-game road trip. If you go back to last season, WIU has played their last 30 games on the road. Western Illinois will end its long road trip next Wednesday (Apr. 5) when they take on Illinois State at Alfred D. Boyer.

Start of Summit League Play
After postponements to last weekend's series against St. Thomas, Western Illinois will open its Summit League schedule this weekend at Oral Roberts. The Leathernecks went 5-19 in conference play last season.

Leading the Pack
Nick Mitchell continues to be atop of the offensive categories for the Leathernecks. The sophomore outfielder is batting a Summit League high in doubles (9). Nick is in the top five in the Summit League in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, OPS, hits, triples, and total bases. Mitchell leads all WIU in all those categories, and home runs and runs scored.

Getting on Base
Jake Allgeyer has been a getting-on-base machine in the first 20 games of the season. The junior has reached base safely in 19 of the first 20 games that Western Illinois has played this season. He has reached via a hit in 15 of the 19. Allgeyer also leads the team in base on balls reaching first base 11 times.

Scouting Oral Roberts
Oral Roberts comes into the weekend with a 17-9 overall record after beating Missouri State 4-0 on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles opened their Summit League play two weeks ago when they welcomed St. Thomas to Tulsa. ORU defeated the Tommies in all three games, outscoring them a combined 39-6 on the weekend. Jonah Cox has led the high-powered ORU offense. Cox has slugged 47 hits this season, driving in 24. Cox leads ORU batting in batting average, hitting .431 on the season.

Next Up
Western Illinois returns to Alfred D. Boyer for four home games next week. The home stand starts on Wednesday (Apr. 5) against Illinois State before welcoming South Dakota State for a three-game series beginning on Friday (Apr. 7).
