Last Week
Last weekend, the Leathernecks took their talents to Cape Girardeau, Mo., taking on Southeast Missouri State. WIU dropped all three games of the series. In Sunday's 14-inning marathon, Jack Bell pitched 5.2 innings out of the bullpen. The junior struck out five Redhawks allowing just two hits and no runs. Bell came into relief in the 7th inning, working around a bases-loaded jam to keep the game level at six.

Leading the Pack
Nick Mitchell has been on a tear during non-conference play. The sophomore outfielder is batting a Summit League high in OPS (1.273), doubles (9), triples (4), total bases (60), and slugging (.779). Nick is also in the top five in the Summit League in batting average, on-base percentage, runs, hits, and RBI.

Getting on Base
Jake Allgeyer has been a getting-on-base machine in the first 19 games of the season. The junior has reached base safely in all 19 games Western Illinois has played this season. He has reached via a hit in 15 of the 19. Allgeyer also leads the team in base on balls reaching first base 11 times.

Road Warriors
Due to cancellations and postponements, Western Illinois will open its 2023 season on a 19-game road trip. If you go back to last season, WIU has played their last 26 games on the road. That number will increase with four more road games until WIU's first home game on Apr. 5 against Illinois State University.

Scouting UIC
UIC has started the season with an 8-11 record. The Flames opened Missouri Valley Conference play last weekend, losing all three games to Southern Illinois. UIC has three hitters who are hitting over the .300 mark. Charlie Szykowny (.333) and AJ Henkle (.322) have combined for 45 hits this season.

Next Up
Western Illinois will travel down to Oral Roberts University for a three-game set to open Summit League play on Mar. 31.
