Dins’ Career Game Fuels Wire-to-Wire Road Victory

Alissa Dins came three assists shy of a triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Western Illinois women's basketball played Thursday night (Feb. 9), defeating the Kansas City Roos 72-52 at the Swinney Center in Kansas City, Mo. The victory was fueled by several big performances, as four Leathernecks finished with double-figure scoring totals and three had at least four assists to set a new season-high mark for assists in a game with 24.

"It's really nice to get a 20-point win on the road. UMKC has some good post players and quick guards so I think what we did defensively really bothered them," head coach JD Gravina said. "The best thing was that we rebounded well. I know we gave up 14 offensive rebounds but we had 15 of our own… that was a big concern because their guards rebound as well. It's just nice to win on the road."

Western came out rolling early, opening the game on a quick 9-2 run. Anna Deets connected on two triples in the opening two-and-a-half minutes of play as Western built a 13-point lead at the first media break. The hot shooting continued down the stretch of the first as Western shot 10-16 from the field and 7-11 from deep to take a 28-11 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

"That start was really big for us because they play that matchup zone and if you start off cold then the basket just keeps getting smaller and smaller," Gravina said. "We did a good job of getting some easy buckets but having that hot shooting start was huge for us and gave us a buffer when we did cool off - it helped that we had that lead."

The Leatherneck shooting did cool off but the ball continued to quickly move around the perimeter, assisting on each of the team's five made baskets in the second as the Leathernecks held a 40-25 advantage after 20 minutes of action.

In the third quarter, WIU's offense started to find its groove again, out-scoring UMKC 19-14 while shooting 7-17 from the field (41.2%) and a perfect 5-5 at the line. The Leathernecks built their biggest lead of the game mid-way through the period, taking a 53-29 advantage with 5:05 to go on an Elizabeth Lutz layup. After Jada Thorpe found Alissa Dins wide open under the basket in the waning seconds of teh third, Western took a 59-39 lead into the final quarter. Both teams finished with 13 points in the final period as Western cruised to a 72-52 victory, earning its ninth of the season.

Addi Brownfield led all scorers with 16 points on 6-13 shooting and 2-2 from deep, also adding three rebounds, four assists and one block. Anna Deets' nine first-quarter points paved the way for 13 in the game, and Carla Flores scored 12 in 27 minutes of action. Alissa Dins completed one of the biggest games of her collegiate career by tying her career-best mark in rebounds and setting a new personal best for assists, finishing with 12 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block. Jada Thorpe scored seven as Elizabeth Lutz recorded six points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

"That's triple double watch," Gravina said of Dins' performance. "She's such a good passer and I think that's important when teams are laying off her that she can make good passes to cutters. She's still continuing to gain confidence offensively and she scored some baskets around the rim and lane which was good.

"I thought a lot of kids had good, solid games which was important," he added.

As a team, Western Illinois shot 27-69 (39%) from the field and made 10 triples, grabbing 41 rebounds and winning the battle on the offensive glass, 15-14. The Leathernecks converted those 15 offensive boards into 30 points in the paint while the defense utilized nine steals and three blocks to generate 15 Roo turnovers, converting those into 12 points off turnovers and 13 on the fast break. Western's bench provided 13 points as Western Illinois never trailed in the game.

The Leathernecks are back in action this Saturday (Feb. 11), playing Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
