Adams' Historic Day Leads Leathernecks

Adams sets two program records

IOWA CITY -- At Saturday's Jimmy Grant Invitational in Iowa City, Western Illinois' Aliyah Adams had a day for the record book – literally.

Adams broke a pair of Leatherneck indoor track and field records on Saturday, breaking Penny Sellers' 40-year program record in the 60m hurdles, running the event in 8.64 seconds, then adding to her day, with a new program mark in the long jump, winning the event with a best effort of 6.1 meters.
Adams was not the lone Leatherneck to shine on Saturday.

The pole vault was the event of the day for Western Illinois as Arnie Grunert took the men's title with a best effort of 5.05 meters. On the women's side, Emma Ponx set a new PR, clearing 3.66 meters to win.

Also taking home a field event title was Alessandro Belluz. Belluz won the men's high jump, clearing two meters. Belluz made two more podium appearances, finishing second in the triple jump, with a best of 13 meters, 97 meters and third in the long jump with a best of 6.73 meters.

Passion Crews also claimed an event win for the Leathernecks, winning the women's 400 in 57.93.

Others claiming a top-three event finish were Malachi Barendilla, who finished third in the men's 60m Premier (6.97) and. Briza Dure, who was second in the women's Premier 200 (25.41). Barendilla was back at it, finishing third in the men's 200 premier (22.39), just behind second-place Jaiden Young (22.13).

The women's 400 was Leatherneck-dominated, as Crews, Zwandi Harrison (1:00.47) and Temira Goods (1:02.66) went one-two-three.
In the one-miler, Logan Lommel finished third in 4:16.52. In the women's high jump, Mia Harris and Karlie Zumstein tied for third with a best of 1.5 meters.

Western Illinois is now off until returning to Iowa City to run in the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Saturday, January 20.
