Leathernecks Fall Short in Clash with SEMO

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois fell heartbreakingly on Friday night against the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks as they fell in five sets. WIU falls to 6-7 in OVC play.

Set 1
Western Illinois came out of the gates slow as they found themselves down 6-1, but they didn't panic. Annika Black would have two of her ten kills to bring WIU with four at 7-3. Maggie Craker would have a kill in the middle of two Redhawk errors as WIU cut the deficit to two at 8-6. SEMO would keep control, watching their lead grow to three at 11-8. Grace Kremer would get WIU back into the match with a kill sparking a 5-0 run, putting WIU in front 13-11. The Leathernecks would continue to control the set midway through as they held a 16-14 lead. SEMO tied the match at 17 and pulled ahead by two (19-17) on a 4-0 run. Julianna Schmidt cut the deficit back to one for WIU before a Redhawk attack error had the set squared at 19. Both teams traded points as the score stayed deadlocked at 22. Keyana Cruse would give WIU the lead with a kill, and an attack error would put WIU at a set point. SEMO would fight off four set points as they finished the set on a 4-0 run, taking set one 26-24.

Set 2
Cruse got things going for WIU to start the second set, giving WIU an early 1-0 lead. Both teams jostled for control through the beginning phases, with neither gaining a lead above two points. With the score tied at ten, WIU returned to Cruse as she put the Leathernecks ahead for good. WIU would use that kill to help ignite a 4-1 run, pulling in front 14-11. The Leathernecks would keep on the pressure as Kennedy Adair would have three kills in four points, and Kremer would have a service ace, pushing WIU's lead out to seven. (20-13). SEMO attempted to claw back but kills by Schmidt, Cruse, and Adair kept them away from striking distance as Western Illinois took the second set 25-21.

Set 3
The third set was a set of runs. After an opening 2-0 run by the Redhawks, WIU used a 3-0 run to climb in front 3-2. SEMO responded with a 7-1 run to open the set 9-4. WIU would cut the deficit to three (10-7)  with a 2-0 run after a Schmidt kill. The third set would stall at the five-point deficit as both teams traded points. With the score at 20-15, SEMO had one final run in them as a 5-2 run would end the set at 25-17.

Set 4
WIU shook off the third set quickly as they leaped in front 4-2 in set four. Kremer and Cruse would sandwich around a Redhawk attack error with kills to double WIU's lead 7-3. SEMO clawed back, tying the set at eight and nine before WIU went back in front of a Schmidt kill. Ahead 10-9, WIU used a 5-0 run to gain separation heading into the media timeout at 15-9. SEMO cut the deficit in half, but Kremer had a response as WIU grew their lead back to four, 18-14. WIU would hold the four-point advantage at 22-18, forcing a timeout by SEMO. Out of the break, SEMO rattled off three quick points to cut WIU's lead to one, but Cruse ended all hopes of a comeback as she rattled off two kills, giving the Leathernecks a 25-22 set win.

Set 5
The Leathernecks came out swinging in the fifth set. Schmidt, Cruse, Black, and Kremer saw their names with a kill as WIU was in front 5-2. SEMO chipped away at the Leatherneck lead as they tied the set at six. Kremer put WIU back in front 7-6 with a kill as both teams would trade points. With the score tied at nine, the Redhawks used a 2-0 run, pulling ahead 11-9, forcing WIU to call a timeout. Schmidt and Cruse responded out of the timeout with back-to-back kills, tying the set at 11. SEMO ended the set on a 4-0 run to take the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

Western Illinois had 62 kills as a team on Friday night. The Leathernecks saw five players with double-digit kills. Keyana Cruse led the way with 16, followed by Julianna Schmidt with 13, and Kennedy Adair, Annika Black, and Grace Kremer all had 10. Kaitlyn Wickersheim (22), Karli Wenzel (20), and Grace Ulatowski (20) all contributed over 20 digs on the night. Cruse was the only other Leatherneck with double-digit digs with 13. Maggie Craker dished out 49 assists, helping WIU hit .243% on the night. WIU dominated the block category with seven solo blocks on their way to 13 total blocks. Schmidt had four solos to lead the way.
