WIU Falls to SEMO

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois volleyball fell to Southeast Missouri State in four sets on Saturday (11/4/23) night. The Leathernecks battled hard but ran out of steam as WIU moved to 6-8 in conference place.

SET 1
Karli Wenzel started the first set out with a bang as a service ace started the match. Grace Kremer added a kill as WIU began the first set on a 3-0 run. After a SEMO kill, WIU added two more points as Annika Black started WIU's offense on a 5-1 run. The Redhawks would not go away, cutting the deficit to one at 7-6. Kennedy Adair responded with a kill as WIU pushed their lead back to three, 10-7. The set would stay tight through the middle of the first set as everything would be tied at 17. With the score at 17-17, SEMO went on a 4-0 run, gaining separation. Down 24-20, Black put together back-to-back kills before WIU fell in set one 25-22.

SET 2
SEMO came out in set two with an early 2-0 run before WIU settled in with a 3-0 run. The Leathernecks increased their lead with kills from Grace Nichols and Keyana Cruse as WIU headed into the middle portion with an 11-7 lead. SEMO cut Western Illinois's lead to two at 18-16, but Nichols and Kremer responded with two quick kills, giving the Leathernecks a four-point advantage. Up 22-20, Cruse and Kremer took the Leathernecks the rest of the way with two kills and a service ace, giving WIU a 25-20 set win.

SET 3
Seventeen ties and seven lead changes passed the highly competitive third set. Western Illinois jumped in front early with a Cruse kill. SEMO responded two points late, jumping in front 3-2. Kennedy Bauer would give the set its third tie at 3-3 with a kill of her own. Separation would be hard to find as a team could not gain more than a one-point advantage until Kaitlyn Wickersheim would have a service ace for WIU, giving them a 15-13 lead heading into the media break. Maggie Craker would give WIU their largest lead at 17-14 with a kill. SEMO stuck around tying the set at 20 before they would finish on a 5-2 run, taking set three 25-22.

SET 4
WIU used everything they had in set four as SEMO would be too much to handle. An opening 6-2 run saw Western Illinois fall behind early. They would recover with two Redhawk attack errors and a Nichols kill, putting the set at 6-5. SEMO would hold a two-pint advantage at 8-6 before they erupted with an 8-0 run pulling in front 16-6. A block by Black and Kremer, followed by a kill by Adair, pulled WIU within eight 20-12. SEMO did not budge as they took back control for a 25-14 set win.

Cruse led the offense for WIU with eight kills. Grace Nichols and Grace Kremer finished with seven each. Karli Wenzel led the dig category with 25. Cruse had 18 and Grace Ulatowski had 15. WIU out-blocked SEMO for the second consecutive night, 13-5. WIU had eight service aces on the night.
