Salukis top Leathernecks on Saturday

Western Illinois at Northern Iowa next Saturday

MACOMB – The Western Illinois football team took on Southern Illinois on Saturday, falling to the Salukis at home, 63-0. The Leathernecks are on the road the next two Saturdays, taking on Northern Iowa next week in Cedar Falls and Indiana State in Terre Haute the week after. WIU closes out the regular season against South Dakota on Nov 18 in Macomb.

Southern Illinois was able to get the Leatherneck offense off the field, holding WIU to 4-18 on third down conversions. The Salukis, on the other hand, would score quickly when they possessed the ball as the Leathernecks won time of possession 33:09-26:51.

"We came out and wanted to run the football, we got in some third and manageables but we couldn't convert, that was what stood out to me, we put an emphasis on running the football, we wanted to not take sacks, only positive plays," coach Myers Hendrickson said. "That is one bright spot, we did rush for 100 yards, but we were bad on third down overall."

Both teams were held scoreless on their first drives as the Leatherneck defense forced a Southern Illinois fumble after a WIU three and out. On Western's ensuing possession, the Leathernecks were stopped short on a fourth-down attempt. On the next play, Southern Illinois went 64 yards for a score and a 7-0 lead.

Southern Illinois scored on their next two drives to lead 21-0 early in the second quarter. Western Illinois did force another Saluki turnover, but the Leathernecks could not turn the miscues into points.

"The first half was extremely frustrating, we had huge takeaways against a really good offense, and if you get two takeaways, you have to score off of because they're not going to make unforced errors," Hendrickson said. "Those were huge plays by our defense because if you get turnovers against Southern Illinois this year, it's a true takeaway, they're giving anything to you."

The Salukis would add a pair of scores before the break, taking a 35-0 lead into halftime.

Ludovick Choquete led Western Illinois on the ground, rushing for 49 yards on nine carries. Getting his first extended action of the season, Dylan Van also had a strong second half, rushing for 35 yards on eight carries.

Ryan Crandall led the Leatherneck defense, finishing with six tackles and two pass breakups while JJ Ross and Bradyn Smith each had five. Anthony Quinney added four tackles, one for loss.
