Western Illinois Closes MVFC Series vs. UNI with Loss

Panthers top Leathernecks, 50-6

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Western Illinois football team played its final game in the UNI-Dome as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference on Saturday with Northern Iowa taking a 50-6 win. The Leathernecks and Panthers have played 52 times as MVFC and Gateway Conference rivals.

On Saturday, the Panthers took an early lead, driving the game's opening possession for a touchdown. After a WIU punt, UNI drove the ball deep into Western Illinois territory but a fumble was recovered by JJ Ross, ending the Northern Iowa drive.

Unfortunately for WIU, the Leathernecks turned the ball over on a fumble on the next play, setting UNI up at the six-yard line. The Panthers scored on the next play from scrimmage, going ahead 14-0.

UNI would score on each possession before half, going ahead 33-0 at the break.

The Panther lead grew to 50-0 before Matt Morrissey hit Tajh Sanders for a four-yard touchdown pass, to cap the game's scoring, 50-6.

Morrissey would go 18-24 through the air with one touchdown and one interception. He threw for 127 yards.

Jay Parker was the leading receiver, hauling in a team-high nine catches for 64 yards.

Defensively, KaRon Coleman had a big day, finishing with a Leatherneck-high 10 tackles, seven being solo. Ross, Ryan Crandall, Brayden Smith and Juan DelaCruz all added six.

The Leathernecks fall to 0-9 overall, 0-6 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The team remains on the road next week, traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana to take on Indiana State at noon. The game is the road finale for WIU. Western Illinois plays its regular season finale on November 18, hosting South Dakota.
