Western Illinois Starts Strong in Loss to Indiana State

Leathernecks fall to Sycamores, 27-6

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – The Western Illinois football team managed to take a second-quarter lead on Indiana State on Saturday but the Leathernecks could not sustain the advantage, falling 27-6 to the Sycamores in Terre Haute on Saturday. The game was the final road contest of the season and as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference for Western. The Leathernecks close the regular season next Saturday, hosting South Dakota at 1 p.m.

"Our compete level was there, I love the way we came to work all week, we laid it all on the line, we put it all out there but we ran out of gas in the second half," coach Myers Hendrickson said. "They (Indiana State) did a nice job rushing the football, we knew it would be a close game, basically a tie game at half, but they were able to rush the ball in the third and fourth quarter and on offense we gave up some sacks, which we can't do."

After a scoreless first quarter, quarterback Matt Morrissey connected on a deep pass down the middle to Donald McKinney, who took the ball into the endzone for a 79-yard score. The play was the longest play from scrimmage this season for WIU. The Leathernecks missed the ensuing PAT to lead 6-0.

Western held the lead for over six minutes before Indiana State took the lead for good at the 7:02 mark on a 41-yard rush and extra point. The score remained 7-6 in favor of the Sycamores going into half.

After intermission, Indiana State scored on each of its first four possessions, getting a touchdown, two field goals and another touchdown to go up 27-6 midway through the fourth quarter.

Getting his first career start, freshman running back Dylan Van had a strong day, leading the team in rushing, grinding out 57 yards on 16 carries.

"I've been getting ready the whole season to go in and play, so when I was able to get my chance to come in and start, I was ready because I was getting ready all season," Van said.

Morrissey completed 18-29 passes for 177 yards and the touchdown to McKinney. McKinney had two receptions for 82 yards while Jay Parker had six catches for 44.

Defensively, the Leathernecks held Indiana State in check for a half, but after the break, the Sycamores were able to get the ground game going, finishing the contest with 209 after rushing for 69 in the first half.

"Everybody was fitting their gap and doing their assignments, not worrying about anyone else's job," linebacker Anthony Quinney said. "When we play like that, we do well, when we try to do someone else's job and we get out of gaps, that's when we have problems."

Juan DelaCruz led the defense, finishing with 10 tackles. Noah Epley added eight and Cordell Wilson had seven.
