Western Illinois Falls in MVFC Finale

Leathernecks head to Ohio Valley next season

MACOMB – The Western Illinois football season came to a close on Saturday as the Leathernecks dropped their season and Missouri Valley Football Conference finale to South Dakota, 48-6.

The Leathernecks had a strong start to the game as Matt Morrissey connected with Tre Maronic on a 15-yard touchdown pass at the four minute, 37 second mark of the first quarter, giving Western Illinois a 6-3 lead.

The scoring reception was Maronic's first as a Leatherneck.

South Dakota retook the lead for good on its next possession, a 54-yard touchdown pass.

The Coyote defense stymied Western Illinois' offense over the next three quarters, not allowing the Leathernecks another score the rest of the way.

The Leatherneck defense managed to keep WIU in the game, as the 'Yotes struggled to move the ball until getting a touchdown and field goal in the final 2:44 of the second quarter, taking a 20-6 lead into halftime.

The second half belonged to the No. 5 ranked Coyotes, as USD scored four touchdowns to put away the game.

Morrissey completed 14-25 for 120 yards and a touchdown while Jay Parker hauled in a team-high six catches for 43 yards. Tajh Sanders added three catches for 24 yards.

The Leathernecks finished with nine first downs, 26 yards rushing, 125 yards passing and 171 total yards.

Ryan Crandall led the WIU defense, finishing with a game-high nine tackles. KJ Coleman and Willie Jones each added seven while Frederick Greenhoward and Cordell Wilson each had five stops.

Jared Parker finished with 10 punts and a 36.5 average. He had a long of 54 and three downed inside the 20.

Western Illinois now heads into the offseason with spring football starting in March.
