A Game of Firsts

Leathernecks draw against IUPUI.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Western Illinois men's soccer played the second game of its weekend series on Sunday (Sept. 2), finishing the matchup tied 3-3 with the Jaguars of IUPUI. Sunday's performance was the final game of this two-game roadtrip and the team will next face SIUE in Macomb.

It was the Leathernecks who took control during the first half of action, as Jack Immesoete scored the first goal of his Leatherneck career in the 33rd minute. Off a pass from Muazu Sagir, Immesoete slotted the ball to the left of the goalkeeper to push Western ahead by one goal. That one-goal advantage would hold until the halftime whistle, with Western holding a 1-0 advantage at the break.

The second half started off well for WIU, with Sofian Maghouz scoring his first goal as a Leatherneck in the 66th minute, though IUPUI scored its first goal of the game in the 73rd minute to cut into Western's lead while laying the foundation for a wild finish. The Jaguars leveled things in the 87th minute, but that tie was quickly erased by Xavier Brown, who finished yet another Sagir pass to take back the lead. IUPUI responded just as quickly, tying it back up in the 88th. In total, the teams combined for three goals in 51 seconds during the late-game scramble, as the game went final at 3-3.

Maghouz led the team in shots with four, three of which were on target, as Western finished the Sunday contest with eight shots – five of which were on goal. Western took one corner kick while drawing 13 fouls, and the defense baited IUPUI's attackers into four offside calls. Alex Flowers finished the game with four saves in net for Western.

Sunday's performance was full of firsts, with Sofian Maghouz making his first official appearance and start since transferring from Iowa Lakes Community College, also scoring his first goal. Immesoete's goal in the 33rd minute was the also the first of his Western Illinois career.

With three assists, Muazu Sagir set a career-best mark for a single game and it's also his first multi-assist performance at WIU. The trio of helpers also found its way into the all-time record book, as it ties Mike Verning (1995), and Tom Soehn (twice in 1987) for second-most in a single game in program history. The program record is four and, after scoring against Fort Wayne, Sagir now leads the team in points thanks to one goal and three assists in three matches.

Western Illinois is back on Friday (Sept. 9), hosting SIUE at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
