WIU Falls in Grand Forks

Isabel Navas Rodriguez made seven saves, Emmy Ellington led the team in shots with three.

GRAND FORKS, S.D. – Leatherneck women's soccer was in action on Friday (Sept. 30), facing the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota in the first game of this weekend's road trip; the matchup that finished 1-0 in favor of UND. After a travel day, WIU is back in action on Sunday (Oct. 2), facing North Dakota State in Fargo.

Featuring regular starters such as Alex Bassen and Angie Knies, the game's opening 45 minutes would feature moments of opportunity for both squads. Bailey Burlingham found herself open from range after some nifty dribbling in the 9th minute and Amy Andrews put two shots on net as UND finished with a slight advantage in shots, 5-4. Despite the opportunities, the game was level at half.

After a level first period of play, UND found a breakthrough in the latter portions of the second half, scoring in the 76th minute to take a one-goal advantage. Western would attempt three shots in the game's final five minutes, including an attempt by Emmy Ellington that forced a save, but was unable to find a leveler, and the game went final in favor of North Dakota.

Ellington led the team in shots with three while Andrews' two shots on goal was a team-high, as the Leathernecks finished with eight total attempts. Andrews was one of four Leathernecks to play all 90 minutes, joining Hana Daoudi, Angie Knies and Isabel Navas Rodriguez. Navas Rodriguez would make seven saves in net as the team drew 11 fouls and took two corner kicks.
