Women’s Soccer Drops Road Contest at NDSU

Leathernecks host South Dakota, South Dakota State next weekend.

FARGO, N.D. – Western Illinois women's soccer was in action on Sunday (Oct. 2), facing the North Dakota State Bison at Dacotah Field in Fargo, N.D., in a game that finished 4-0 in favor of NDSU. With five games remaining in the season, Western now sits at sixth in the Summit League Standings ahead next weekend's home contests against South Dakota (seventh) and south Dakota State (eighth).

North Dakota State looked like it was going to strike early, playing a ball over the top and creating a one-on-one opportunity for the Bison attack in the 17th minute. However, the NDSU attacker was no match for Isabel Navas Rodriguez, who made a nice kick save with her left foot to keep the game level at zero. Neither team would score in the remaining 28 minutes of action and it was scoreless at the break.

Western conceded in the 54th and 59th minutes as the Bison offense ramped up its pressure, later adding a third in the 73rd minute. WIU found some scoring opportunities throughout the latter portions of the half but was unable to convert and the game went final at 4-0 after the Bison scored with 11 seconds remaining in the game.

Amy Andrews finished with a game-high four shots, two of which were on target, as Western Illinois made seven attempts at goal in the game – four of which were on target. The Leathernecks took one corner kick and drew nine fouls, while Navas Rodriguez made seven saves in goal.

Western is back in action next week, hosting South Dakota and South Dakota State in Macomb. Kickoffs are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 7) and 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 9).
