West Defeats East in Non-League Finale

Amy Andrews scored her league-leading fifth goal of the season, Western hosts Oral Roberts next Friday.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Western Illinois women's soccer played Friday afternoon, Sept. 16, hitting the road to face the Panthers of Eastern Illinois in a game that finished as a 1-0 victory. The result was WIU's second win in its last three games and fourth shutout of the season, as several Leathernecks solidified their positions among the Summit League's statistical leaders.

It didn't take long for WIU to find the breakthrough as Amy Andrews opened the game's scoring just 15 minutes into the contest, her fifth  of the season. After Hana Daoudi played a long cross from out wide, Andrews controlled the ball and fired from the top of the box, sending it to the left of the Eastern Illinois goalkeeper and giving the Leathernecks an early lead. Andrews entered Friday's contest in a four-way tie for the top scorer in the Summit League, but Friday's goal gave her sole possession of the league-lead while continuing to increase her program-leading tally.

High pressure from the 'Necks created several dangerous opportunities throughout the match as the team's defense stood tall as it has all season, recording clean sheet number four as WIU approaches the halfway point in the season. Isabel Navas Rodriguez made two saves and was also credited with her fourth shutout of the season. Navas Rodriguez is now second among Summit League goalkeepers in shutouts per game (.500), second in total saves (36), fourth in save percentage (.818) and third in saves per game (4.5).

Hana Daoudi's assist was her team-leading second on the season, while fellow freshman Olivia Heinert started and recorded a shot in 86 minutes of action. Heinert and Daoudi have played big roles in their first seasons of collegiate action, combining to make 15 starts and play nearly 1,300 minutes. Fellow freshman Samantha Claesson made her fourth appearance on the year, playing a season-high 20 minutes.

Friday's game officially concluded non-league competition for the Leathernecks, as the final nine opponents this season will all be Summit League schools. Western did find success during league competition last season, finishing with a winning record at 5-4. The action begins at home next Friday (Sept. 23), with the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles making their way to Macomb. Kick off at John MacKenzie Alumni Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
