Women’s Soccer Falls in Summit League Opener

Leathernecks turn around quickly, face Kansas City on Sunday at 1 p.m.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois women's soccer was in action Friday afternoon (Sept. 23), falling 2-1 to the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts University. With the result, the Leathernecks move to 2-4-3 on the season with eight games remaining and will play host to the Kansas City Roos on Sunday (Sept. 25).

It was the Leathernecks who broke the game open, scoring the game's first goal in the 34th minute. In a counter attacking situation, Bailey Burlingham got behind the defense and drew a penalty, setting up a Leatherneck penalty kick with the opportunity to take a lead. Up stepped Amy Andrews, who fired a ball to the goalkeeper's left to give Western an early advantage. Oral Roberts equalized four minutes later off a scramble in the box, and the game was tied at half.

ORU took the lead with a goal in the 60th minute and Western was unable to equalize as the game went final 2-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

As a team, Western Illinois managed five shots, three of which were on goal, while taking one corner kick and drawing seven fouls. Andrews led the team in shots with two (two on goal) while Emmy Ellington also recorded a shot on goal. Western utilized six players as substitutes, including Myla Stewart who made her first appearance since starting against Eastern Michigan, while Isabel Navas Rodriguez made 10 saves.

Andrews once again took back sole possession of the league-lead in goals (six) ahead of a full weekend of Summit League action, while her average of more than two shots on goal per game continues to be the top mark in the league. Navas Rodriguez jumped into the league lead for total saves (46) and saves per game (5.11), while her career-best save percentage (82.1%) ranks at fourth.
