Leathernecks Draw on Road

Both teams combined for eight yellow cards, WIU is back in action Saturday.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Western Illinois men's soccer played on Tuesday, heading north for a mid-week matchup against the Milwaukee Panthers in a game that finished as a 1-1 draw. Xavier Brown scored his team-leading second goal of the season as the team looks ahead to a Saturday matchup against Northern Illinois.

Milwaukee took the lead in the 24th minute thanks to a headed ball, but that lead would not last long. After a Damian Rincon long ball was nodded down by the Panther defender, Jack Immesoete played a simple pass to Xavier Brown. Brown loaded up and fired from outside of the 18-yard box, placing the ball up and away from the goalkeeper to level the game just six minutes after Western conceded. Brown now leads the team in scoring with his second, and each of his three career goals have come against Horizon League competition.

The Leathernecks looked close to a breakthrough in the 60th minute thanks to Luis Rodrigues, who went down in the box after contact and drew a Leatherneck penalty. Sofian Maghouz stepped up to the spot and put his shot low and to the right, but Milwaukee's goalkeeper guessed correctly to keep the game level. Both teams would create chances down the stretch but couldn't find a breakthrough and the game went final at 1-1.

Maghouz tied with Arian Mehrang for the team-lead in shots, each player recording three attempts on goal; the Leathernecks finished with 10 total in the game, five of which were on-target. Western attempted two corner kicks and drew 17 Panther fouls, while goalkeeper Alex Flowers added to his strong start to the season with six more saves. After Tuesday's performance, Flowers now ranks third among Summit League goalkeepers in saves per game with an average of 4.8, while Maghouz leads the league in shots on goal with eight.

Tuesday's matchup was the last road game for some time as Western will play its next five contests at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The first of which is scheduled for Saturday (Sept. 17) at 1 p.m.,  with the Huskies of Northern Illinois making their way to Macomb.
