Men’s Soccer Falls to NIU

Leathernecks controlled 65% of the game’s possession, WIU opens conference play next weekend.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois men's soccer played on Saturday (Sept. 17), hosting the Northern Illinois Huskies in a game that finished 1-0 in favor of NIU. Northern Illinois found a breakthrough in the 50th minute that Western was unable to overcome despite creating several chances, and the Leathernecks will be back in action on Tuesday.

The Leathernecks and Huskies were close in several statistical categories, with the Huskies recording nine shots (four on target) to Western's eight shots (two on target) and taking seven corner kicks to Western Illinois' four. WIU drew 16 fouls in the game while committing just eight, and the Leathernecks controlled a season-high 65% of possession. Alex Flowers made three saves in the game including an acrobatic stop in the early part of the second half.
 
Sofian Maghouz led the team in shots with five, starting and playing all 90 minutes for the first time since joining the program. Flowers, Marco Presta and Kyle Owen also played the full 90, while Jaylen Drummond made his 2022 season debut with 33 minutes off the bench.
 
The Leathernecks are back in action Tuesday (Sept. 20), taking on the Northern Kentucky Norse at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in an afternoon contest scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
