Western Illinois falls at Green Bay

Leathernecks drop 2-0 contest to Phoenix

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team went on the road and suffered their first loss of the regular season, dropping a 2-0 contest to Green Bay on Thursday. The match was the first for the Leathernecks since recording a draw against Eastern Michigan last Thursday.

Western Illinois (0-1-1) had the first strong scoring chance of the match in the 14th minute as Amy Andrews took a feed at the top of the 18-yard box. Andrews took a few dribbles and sent a shot that was smothered by the Green Bay keeper to keep the match scoreless. Green Bay (2-0-0) was able to dent the scoreboard five minutes later as Zoey Pagels took a pass close to the net and deposited the ball into the goal at the 18 minute, 37 second mark.

The Phoenix were able to control possession and play in the first half, but the Leathernecks would not allow Green Bay a second goal. Conversely, the Phoenix would not allow the equalizer, holding the 1-0 advantage into the break. In the first half, Green Bay outshot Western Illinois 8-3, with all three Leatherneck shots coming from Amy Andrews. All three WIU shots were on goal while three were on net for Green Bay.

In the second half, Western Illinois was able to control possession more, outshooting Green Bay 4-2 in the first 20 minutes of play but the Leathernecks could not tie the match as the Phoenix were able to keep defenders in front of Western Illinois attackers.

In the 74th minute McKayla Kertscher's unassisted goal made it 2-0 and gave the Phoenix the insurance they would need to stay unbeaten on the season.

Isabel Navas Rodrigues had a strong afternoon in net for the Leathernecks, finishing with four saves. Western Illinois ended the match with seven shots, six on goal while Green Bay had 18 shots, six on net. Andrews finished the match with five shots, all on goal while Kayla Turner added a shot on net for the Leathernecks.

The Leathernecks are next in action on Sunday, traveling to take on IUPUI in a 12 p.m. start. Western Illinois returns home to face Milwaukee on Friday, Sept. 2.
