Leathernecks Earn First Clean Sheet of 2022

Navas Rodriguez finishes with four saves, Western Illinois plays IUPUI to a draw.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Western Illinois women's soccer was in action Sunday (Aug. 28), facing the Jaguars of IUPUI in a game that finished as a scoreless draw. The Leathernecks are back in action on Friday (Sep. 2) in Macomb.
 
Isabel Navas Rodriguez played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves, facing 14 total shots and six IUPUI corner kicks while completing the fourth clean sheet of her Western Illinois career after finishing with three last season. The junior 'keeper is coming off the best season of her career in 2021, when she was credited with 11 wins and made 84 saves across 18 appearances.
 
Amy Andrews nearly gave Western a lead in the 24th minute but her attempt bounced off the crossbar and out; Andrews finished with three shots in Sunday's game including one shot on goal that was to the goalkeeper's left in the fifth minute that forced a save. Bailey Burlingham and Olivia Heinert also recorded shots as the Leathernecks took six total with three being on target. The Jaguars attempted 14 shots, four of which were on frame.
 
Alieya Pires, Maddie Hasken, Malerie Rohweder and Samantha Claesson each made their season debuts, combining to play 83 total minutes off the WIU bench. Along with Navas Rodriguez (90), four different players finished with at least 70 minutes of action: Andrews (70), Emmy Ellington (78), Olivia Heinert (78) and Bailey Burlingham, who played a career-high 82 minutes.
 
After opening the 2022 season with three-straight road matches, Western Illinois plays its next two games in Macomb, hosting Milwaukee and Loyola Chicago next weekend. Kick off against the Panthers is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday (Sep. 2), with the Ramblers visiting on Sunday (Aug. 4) for a 1 p.m. matchup.
