Leathernecks Draw in Season Opener

With two come-from-behind goals, WIU fought until the final whistle.

BRIGHTON, Mich. – Fueled by a brace from forward Amy Andrews, the Western Illinois women's soccer program (0-0-1) earned a 2-2 draw against the Eagles of Eastern Michigan (0-0-1) on Thursday, Aug. 18. Thursday's match was the first of 17 matches during the 2022 season.

Eastern Michigan got an early goal in the 2nd minute of the contest, but Western quickly fought back and tied the game in the 7th minute. One year after setting the program record for goals in a season (12) and career (26), Amy Andrews wasted no time opening her 2022 account, finishing a pass from Leah Ahlers to level the score. EMU would take the lead on a goal of their own in the 16th minute and the score was tied at the halftime break.

It didn't take long for Western to get back in the game, as Andrews finished a solo effort in the 50th minute for the team's second come-from-behind goal. Thursday's brace marked the seventh multi-goal performance in Andrews' Leatherneck career and gave the team some much-needed momentum as the minutes ticked on.

The Leathernecks took control down the stretch run of the game, holding Eastern Michigan without a shot in the final 40 minutes of action while putting three of six shots on frame – including a 90th minute shot from Hana Daoudi that just missed and hit the woodwork. The game finished at 2-2.

Andrews and Daoudi, along with Leah Ahlers, Olivia Heinert and Bailey Burlingham, combined to outshoot the opposition 11-9 (6-4 on target), while Myla Stewart made two saves on seven total shots faced in goal. Western took four corner kicks in the game while drawing three fouls. Thursday also marked the debuts for five new players, with transfers Sydnee Sagal (Drake) and Sarah De Gannes (Brewton-Parker) earning starts while freshmen Hana Daoudi, Olivia Heinert and Willow Bade saw their first action at the collegiate level.

Western Illinois is back in action next Thursday, Aug. 25, hitting the road to face Green Bay.
