Early Deficit Hurts Leathernecks At Bradley

Western Illinois shifts focus to the final homestand of the season.

PEORIA, ILL.- Western Illinois baseball (5-36) had a frustrating start in its Tuesday matchup with the Bradley Braves (14-24), falling by a final score of 11-1 in eight innings. Early walks helped Bradley jump out to an early lead, and the Braves pitching staff held the Leatherneck offense in check in the annual rivalry.

The Leathernecks walked the first three batters they faced in the first inning, and the fourth walk of the inning later on scored the first Braves run. Bradley added two more in the inning on a two-run single to take a 3-0 lead after one. An RBI groundout in the second brought in Bradley's fourth run of the game, and the Braves went ahead 5-0 on an RBI single in the third.

Three extra-base hits in the fourth inning gave Bradley its second three-run inning of the evening. Bradley led the inning off with a solo home run to take a 6-0 lead. A single and double later in the inning put two runners in scoring position, and a triple to left-center scored both baserunners easily. A walk and a wild pitch gave Bradley a runner on second in the fifth, and a single to center scored their ninth run of the contest.

WIU's lone run came in the top of the sixth. Adam Juran led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Max Slavens drew a one-out walk and then opted to head to second on a stolen base attempt. Slavens got in safely, and Juran managed to score on the throw to second to give the Leathernecks a run.

Caden Kratz had a pair of great innings out of the bullpen in the sixth and seventh inning, striking out four of the six batters he faced to keep Bradley off the board. Bradley managed to jump on WIU's new pitcher in the eighth to score two more runs and activate the ten-run rule.

Adam Juran was the bright spot for the Leatherneck offense, going 2-3 with a double and a run scored.

Western Illinois begins a four-game homestand on Friday (May 6) as they welcome Summit League newcomer Northern Colorado to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium for a three-game series. First pitch for Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
